6 reasons why carnations are a bride’s BFF

Carnations often get a bad wrap in the wedding world, just the mention of their name conjures images of oversized prom corsages or funeral sprays. However, they’re starting to come into their own and living up to their Latin name Dianthus caryophyllus, meaning “heavenly flower” or “the flower of Gods”. Used over 2000 years ago by the Greeks and Romans in garlands, carnations are one of the world’s oldest cultivated flowers. With a history like that wouldn’t you want this timeless flower at your wedding? Still not convinced? Here are 6 reasons why carnations may be your best friend!

  1. Carnations are versatile in their appearance, don’t just think of the bunches you see at supermarkets. Single stem flowers  are 2-3 inches wide while spray or “mini carns” have many smaller 1 inch flower heads per stem. Some varieties have as many as 40 petals per flower (think peony-like) and double petaled floristan carnations resemble open roses while the chabaud variety look more like pom-poms.

  2. Carnations come in a wide range of natural colors (let’s not think of those weird looking tye dye ones at grocery stores) including white, pink, yellow, light and dark  red, salmon, fuchsia, deep purple and light green. There are also bi-colored and freckled petal variations as well.

  3. Cut carnations are one of the hardiest and longest lasting flowers on the market, seriously! Cut carnations can keep their fresh appearance for up to 2 weeks. If you’re concerned about your flower budget going to waste on arrangements that will be dead after your wedding then consider using carnations – you’ll be able to upcycle your arrangements as thank you gifts to family and friends!

  4. They have a lovely spicy, clove-like fragrance that will leave your guests stopping to smell the roses, or carnations, in this case.

  5. Carnation petals are also edible. Sometimes sprinkled in salads they are more widely used as candied decorations on desserts and cakes. This is a great way to add some cohesive design elements to your wedding!

  6. Because of availability  and numerous flower heads per stem on the mini variety carnations are quite inexpensive compared to other flowers.

So, when thinking about flowers for your wedding, remember carnations are a bride’s BFF!
