To hire a wedding coordinator or not; that is the question. When it comes to wedding planning and coordination every couple needs some help at some point; whether that’s a professional wedding coordinator, a planner, or your family and friends, the real question is which option is the best for you?
Do you need to hire a Wedding Coordinator?
Here’s how to know!
It really depends on your circumstances.
If you’re both super busy with your careers and the idea of taking on all of the details yourselves overwhelms you then probably a planner is in your future.
However, other couples relish the process and enjoy navigating this new territory together and are particularly resistant to stress (go you!). If this sounds like you then you probably will want a Wedding Coordinator (aka Day of Coordinator or Month of Coordinator).
If you’re on the fence as to whether to hire a wedding coordinator or not (hint: the answer is yes. It’s always yes!), I’ve outlined a few criteria that will help you determine whether you need a coordinator.
Do you want your friends/families to be in charge of your wedding day? – It doesn’t take long to realize that a wedding, no matter how small, simple or intimate it may be, involves a lot of moving pieces and logistics, which is why it often makes sense to turn over the legwork to someone who’s made bringing weddings to life their actual profession. Hiring a professional wedding coordinator is also a good move because they can be more objective than a friend or family member and be that advocate for you and your fiancé on your wedding day.

Are You Uncertain About Your Vendor Contracts? – Weddings often involve lots of vendors—which means lots and lots of contracts. A coordinator is there to help make sense of it all with you, (it’s one of the services I provide my couples) so you understand the services you have (and haven’t) agreed to. A Coordinator will be able to navigate these contracts and advise you if there are any gaps in service so that your wedding celebration goes off without a hitch (except for the hitching of the two of you!).
Are You Planning a Destination Wedding? – Tying the knot an hour or two away from home is one thing. But if you’re venturing halfway across the country to say “I do” (like most of my couples) then that’s a little trickier scenario. If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to research, in-person trips to your wedding destination, or a trusted family member/friend in your wedding area, then hiring a coordinator who specializes in weddings in your area is a necessity. It will alleviate a lot of stress and worry that you may have about any of your vendors, especially if you’re in a different time zone and you find timely communication difficult.
Is Planning Your Wedding Impacting Your Relationships? – If you find that planning your wedding leaves you stressed and worrying about the details on your wedding day and you find yourself snapping at your fiancé, family, and friends you might want to bring in reinforcements. While pre-wedding stress is normal knowing that you have assistance on the day can alleviate the burden. While the aforementioned criteria are all useful when deciding on whether to hire a wedding coordinator or going it alone, I’d say that your mental wellness is the biggest indicator of needing additional assistance.

Taking on all of the details (especially if you’re planning a large or destination wedding ) can be overwhelming no matter what, which is why I recommend at the very least hiring a Wedding Coordinator .
Hiring a wedding planner or coordinator doesn’t mean signing your authority away—and you don’t need this expert to assist with every aspect of your wedding.
So, if you found yourself nodding your head yes at any of the above questions then you should definitely consider hiring a wedding coordinator!
